The library provides activities that help children develop skills that will get them ready for school or to provide extra practice for skills they are already learning at school. These activities can be found in our Kindergarten Readiness Kits.
Both library branches have nine kits available. These kits are not available for checkout, but are designed to be used in the library to build early literacy and math skills while having fun.
Each kit contains a few books, games, and activities that focus on specific content areas.

How to use the Kindergarten Readiness Kits
- Kits are to be used by children and caregivers together.
- Choose a kit from the shelf. Find a comfortable spot at a table or on the carpet where you can explore some or all of the activities inside.
- Please take one kit at a time and place all of the items back inside of the kit and the kit back on the shelf when you are finished.
- If it appears that any items in the kit are broken or missing, please take the kit to the front desk.
- Each kit has a pocket with coupons inside. When you are finished exploring the kit, take a coupon to the front desk to receive a prize.
- You can use as many kits as you would like during a visit. And we encourage you to come back and try different kits or repeat a favorite kit over and over if you’re finding it to be beneficial and fun!
- Despite their name, these kits are not just for kindergarten students. Any child of any age who might need practice in early literacy and math skills can use the library’s kindergarten readiness kits.
FAQ
- Why are these kits not available for checkout?
- We have designated these kits for in-library use only to ensure they remain available for patrons at all times. While they are not available for checkout, patrons are welcome to use the kits at nearby tables or within private study rooms. This policy also helps manage the numerous small components included in the kits, which would be difficult to track if they left the building.
- Why must the kits be used by children and grownups together?
- Direct caregiver involvement is required for these kits for several reasons. Many of the included activities require specific set-up and adult guidance to ensure the child’s success. Additionally, these kits offer an opportunity for caregivers to assess a child’s skills in specific content areas and identify where further practice may be beneficial. Finally, as many kits contain small components, adult supervision is necessary to ensure all items are accounted for and returned properly.
- My child has already finished kindergarten. May they still use a Kindergarten Readiness Kit?
- Absolutely! These kits are available for children of all ages who might want to receive extra practice in any of the skills represented in the kits.
